Felix Hernandez has reportedly agreed to a $175 million extension with the Mariners, which would be the largest contract ever awarded to a pitcher. The deal will keep Hernandez in Seattle through 2019, at which point he’ll be 33 years old.
In a departure from their usual ways, the Yankees are discussing a contract extension with Robinson Cano, who’s set to become a free agent after the season.
Brandon Webb has officially retired from baseball at age 33. Webb, who last pitched in the majors for the Diamondbacks on Opening Day 2009, was unable to fully recover from chronic shoulder issues.
The Pirates and pitcher Francisco Liriano have agreed to a one-year deal that was delayed earlier in the offseason when Liriano injured his non-throwing arm. Prior to the injury, the deal was to have been for two years. The exact nature of Liriano’s injury has not been disclosed.
The Diamondbacks and 2nd baseman Aaron Hill have agreed to a $36 million extension that will keep Hill in Arizona through 2016. Hill is coming off a career year, having hit .302 with 26 home runs in 2012, numbers that earned him a Silver Slugger awards.
Chone Figgins has signed a minor league deal with the Marlins which includes a spring training invite. This Mariners fan predicts that he will not make the team.
