Over the last several weeks, certain relievers have solidified their roles in their respective bullpens – something that fantasy managers could stand to benefit from. With so many late-inning situations in flux, fantasy managers should be able to pluck a respectable reliever from their free agent pool.

After going 27/21 last year, Jason Heyward is nowhere close to matching last year’s numbers while Domonic Brown has already shattered his previous year’s power numbers combined. We match up the two in this week’s cage match.

It’s easy to get excited about Gerrit Cole, the first pick in the 2011 MLB draft. However, it’s best to take a more conservative approach with the youngster. While he does need to be owned in all fantasy formats, it’s probably a bad idea to expect him to hit the ground running like a Stephen Strasburg. The young right-hander definitely has the tools to succeed at the major league level. His hard, although straight fastball was clocked at 99 mph in his first start against the Giants this past week. He also sports a plus slider, although he needs to throw that more due to lack of movement on his heater. He was impressive in his debut, tossing 6 and a third innings of 2 run ball with 7 hits and no walks while fanning 2.

The Blue Jays have been a big disappointment thus far in the 2013 baseball season, but there are several bright spots including Adam Lind’s performance.

Did the senior circuit ever bring out the big sticks this past week! With ten guys having an OPS above 1.100 and another five guys above 1.000 over the past seven days, along with ten guys hitting better than .400 and a couple getting a hit every second AB, the baseballs in NL over the past week must have seemed like basketballs to many hitters – not good for pitchers. Of course we also got to see the ugly sort of hitting involving the Dodgers (again) and Diamondbacks which offers little value to real life baseball and just makes fantasy owners nervous - let’s get it!
